250 word, 24 hour writing contest with random categories: sci-fi, giving a child a bath, dial

“C’mon, let’s get that dirt off of you,” said Mom as she led me into the house. With my head down, I dropped my bag and followed her into the bathroom. She turned on the bathwater and sat down on the edge of the tub. I plopped into the cold, bubbling water.

“Lec, you can’t be getting into fights like that.”

“But, Mom, they started it, they made fun of how I talk and–” Mom pointed her finger, cutting me off.

“No, ‘buts’ honey, this is important. You beat up two older boys. The teacher was terrified of you by the time I arrived,” said Mom sternly. “You have to be more careful. She described the way you moved as “incredible,” Mom cupped my head with her hand. “And ‘incredible’ draws attention.” I closed my eyes. I could tell she was disappointed.

“We’re all making sacrifices, Lec. Ezec and I work hard to send as much data as possible to help our people.” I splashed some of the stupid water against the wall.

“When can we just be ourselves again?”

“The invasion is any day, honey, but you know when you’re here with just me, you can always be yourself.” Mom held my hand in hers and turned the dial on my watch. My green scales glistened in the water. It felt good like I could relax. Mom looked at me and smiled.

“Sorry for fighting, mom.”

“Don’t be sorry, Lec, just be smarter. These humans are dangerous.”
